| A
flash of sequins, the adrenaline of anxiety: a gasp rises up from the audience.
The trapeze flyer suddenly slips and falls. Clowns come tumbling in; simulating humiliations and injuries to distract from the real ones of the aerial performer. "Miss W. was swinging from a rope held by her brother above, and
her body was suspended from a hold with her teeth. The breaking of one
of her teeth caused her to lose her grip…and she fell to the ground.”
‘Double
Fall Back Twister’ glimpses behind the scenes of the hollow gaiety
of circus life, revealing the simultaneously shabby and excessively flashy
life of the aerial artiste who transforms herself into a glamourous and
confident performer. She lives with the knowledge that during her performance,
any tiny inaccurate move, slip or mistiming could mean certain death. |
